Less than a week in cricket’s most decorated and prestigious tournament and we already have a couple of tons, an upset, five 300+ team scores and re-surging Pakistan unit.
The World Cup 2019 that began on May 30 with the hosts England taking on last year’s semi-finals South Africa. The home side grabbed a convincing 104-run win after wrapping the Proteas side for just 207 while chasing 312.
In the second match it was West Indies who thrashed Pakistan by 7 wickets. West Indies bundled out Pakistan for a paltry 105 and rode on Chris Gayle’s aggressive half-century to complete the win in 13.4 overs.
The last edition’s finalists New Zealand and Australia too started their campaign on a positive note. The Kiwis defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets while Australia beat Afghanistan by 7 wickets on Saturday.
Asian side Bangladesh caused an early upset in the tournament after defeating South Africa in their opening encounter by 21 runs. Batting first, Bangladesh posted 330/6 in 50 overs and later restricted the Proteas for 309/8.
After losing the opening clash to West Indies, Pakistan came back strongly in the tournament as they defeated hosts England by 14 runs on Monday. Despite Joe Root and Jos Butler’s tons, Eoin Morgan’s men failed to chase a target of 349 runs to lose the match.
