India played Pakistan in a crucial Asia cup encounter in Dhaka on 18 March 2012. Batting first Pakistan mustered up an imposing score of 329, for six, with the help of brilliant centuries by openers M.Hafeez105/113 balls, and Nasir Jamshed 112/off 204 balls with most of the Indian bowlers being taken to the cleaners.
In reply India made a disastrous start losing experienced opener Gambhir on the second ball fir a duck. Young Kohli (23)came out to join the Master, Sachin Tendulkar who was playing his last ODI series.
Kohli flowered under the guidance of Sachin and literally exploded after wards hitting the hapless Pakistani bowlers to all parts of the ground, scoring a magnificent and masterfull,183/0ff 148 deliveries and taking India almost single handedly on the threshold of a momentous Victory.
Sachin and Rohit Sharma chipped in with timely half centuries. This Innings heralded the comming of age of Virat Kohli it was a trailer of things to come as Kohli stamped his class and showed the world what a great finisher he would come to be in future.
Remembering the match later with teammate R. Ashwin,Kohli revealed the challenging circumstances under which he scored this match winning knock.”The Pakistani attack was quite potent and had good variety Afridi,Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz and the in form Saeed Ajmal who was bowling at his peak. But batting next to Sachin in the initial overs gave me confidence.
Ajmal was quite a handful because his doosra” was difficult to pick but his off spinners were not as lethal. So I decidedto hit him over the covers and it paid off.
As soon as I negated his ‘doosra’ the potency of his threat reduced and I played him with ease,my aim was to unsettle his length and then strike,we dominated the bowlers and won quite easily in the end.”
A little bit of statistics to show Kohli’s prowess as a finisher.
