Thanks to an all-round performance by Asif Hooper, Grenadine Divers defeated Ford Charlotte Strikers by 22 runs played at Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, St Vincent on Sunday.
Fort Charlotte Strikers captain Keron Cottoy won the toss and decided to field first. It could have been an ideal start as Asif Hooper was dropped by the wicketkeeper. Shem Browne struggled to time the ball while Hooper played with positive intent. Rasheed Frederick got the breakthrough dismissing Browne for 5.
Hooper and Browne added 36 runs in 3.5 overs. Alex Samuel looked in great touch right from word go and kept the scoreboard ticking. After the struggles during the first two matches, Hooper showed his class. Chelson Stowe dismissed the dangerous Samuel for 27.
Hooper and Samuels smashed 21 runs from Gidron Pope in the 8th over. Hooper and Samuel added 62 runs for the 2nd wicket. Chelson Stowe dismissed the dangerous Samuel for 27 and then dismissed Richie Richards. The left-handed Hooper reached his fifty off 35 balls. He smacked a six off the final ball to help Divers post 114 for 3 in 10 overs. Chasing 115 runs to win, Asif Hooper bowled a brilliant first over giving away just 5 runs.
Jaheil Waters was dismissed cheaply by Tijourn Pope for just 2. Gidron Pope was simply sensational with his power-
hitting and kept Strikers in the hunt. Keron Cottoy and Pope added 45 runs for the 2nd wicket. Braxie Browne got the wicket of Strikers captain Cottoy. While wickets fell at the other end, Pope kept the hopes alive. With 48 runs needed off 2 overs, Pope completed his fifty off 27 balls and hit 2 more sixes before being dismissed by Obed McCoy. Grenadine Divers won the match by 22 runs to register their first win of the tournament. Asif Hooper gave away 8 runs in his 2 overs.
