Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has said that Misbah-ul-Haq could have opted for a better shot instant of playing a fancy scoop against India in the final of the inaugural World T20 in South Africa.
“Unfortunately, Pakistan was on the losing side. Misbah Ul Haq was playing so well but in the end, he tried to play that scoop shot. He could have hit a straight six off Joginder Sharma but he tried to go with a fancy scoop. I jumped on my sofa, when I saw, but then when the catch was taken, I was like ‘what’s happening’,” Mahmood added.
Pakistan needed 13 runs of the final over and MS Dhoni had handed the ball to Joginder Sharma. Pakistan eventually lost the match by 5 runs.
This was the first time that a World T20 had happened and India were crowned champions after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan.
This was also the first ICC tournament win for Dhoni as a captain. He later led India to win triumphs in the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and then Champions Trophy in 2013.
Mahmood did appreciate Dhoni and how he led the team and tagged him as a “great leader”. The all-rounder further said that the World T20 win boosted India’s focus in the shortest format of the game as they previously concentrated more on ODIs and Tests.
