Sri Lanka T20I skipper and fast bowler Lasith Malinga became the highest wicket-taker in the shortest format of the game. Malinga achieved the feat during their first encounter of the three-match series against New Zealand in Pallekele.

Malinga cleaned up Colin de Grandhomme in the 14th over to go past Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi who has 98 wickets in 99 matches. It was a slow yorker-length delivery that the batsman tried to guide through mid-wicket but was beaten by the pace and the ball hit the middle-stump. The Sri Lankan seamer has taken 74 matches to etch his name in the record books.
De Grandhomme was Malinga’s second wicket of the day as he had also scalped Colin Munro earlier.
