A day after Sri Lankan cricket player Kusal Mendis was arrested by Horethudwa Police for running over a 64 year old cyclist, who eventually succumbed to his injuries. The Lankan keeper batsman was released on bail. The incident took place on July 5 morning in a Colombo suburb.
According to reports in the media, the man was a local resident and succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to the hospital.
Mendis was returning from a wedding his teammate Avishka Fernando was also with him when the accident occurred. CCTV footage showed Mendis’ SUV drifting off the road and into a garden wall hitting the victim. The police spokesperson, SSP Jaliya Senaratne confirmed the news of Mendis’ arrest and identified the victim as a resident of Gorakapola area.

After being detained at the police station overnight, Mendis was produced in court and released on two personal bails of Sri Lankan rupees one million each. In addition to the penalties/fines his driving license has been temporarily suspended .He is due to appear in court again on Sept 9 for final judgement.
Mendis was a part of the National training squad which had resumed training after the COVID -19 Lockdown. The 25-year-old wicket-keeper batsman made his ODI debut against Ireland in June 2016, and Test Debut vs West Indies. He has played in 44 Tests, scoring 2995 runs at an average of 36.97. He has also represented his country in 76 ODIs scoring 2167 runs at an average of 30.62.
