The Indian Cricket has seen many top-quality winners in recent times. In modern day cricket, Indian team have Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and others which made a major impact on cricketing world.
According to Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev is the biggest match winner that India has ever produced. Under the captaincy of Kapil, the Indian Cricket history by winning the 1983 Prudential Cup which nobody expected. “I remember the first time I played against him was at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in the Wills Trophy in 1978. We had just returned from the tour of Australia and Kapil and another talented all-rounder Rajendra Jadeja started to bowl against Mumbai.
Kapil Dev played one of the best innings in ODI cricket against Zimbabwe in 1983 World Cup. He came when India was tottering 9 for 4 and rescued the Indian innings. He scored 175* off 138 balls which helped them to recover posting a competitive total. During the 1983 World Cup he played a major role with both bat and ball.
The Indian captain was the leading scorer for the Champions with 303 runs. He took a famous catch to dismiss Viv Richards which changed momentum and made life tough for the mighty strong West Indies side.
He featured for India in 131 Test matches and took a total of 434 wickets with 23 times 5 wicket haul. With the bat, Kapil Dev scored 5248 runs from 131 matches ( 227 innings) with the best score of 163.
His last Test match for India was against New Zealand at Hamilton from 19th March 1994. Kapil Dev contributed a lot for the Indian in ODIs. He played a total of 225 matches ( 221 innings) and took 253 wickets. He did a superb with the bat scoring 3783 runs from 189 innings with career best score of 175*.
His contributions to Indian Cricket will be never forgotten. He inspired many youngsters with his 1983 Prudential Cup win that made them to win from tough situation.
