Shreyas Iyer ,25, really impressed every one with is batting skills in all forms of domestic cricket ,while playing for Mumbai since past three seasons. He was compared to the legendary Sehwag for his fearless and dominating strokeplay, and excellent hand eye coordination, even against the abrupt lateral movement of the ball.
Keeping his consistent and superlative performance at domestic level he was given the opportunity by selectors to represent India in ODIs against Srilanka at Dharmshala in 2017, December,.His debut however was a forgetfull one ,batting at two down he scored a scratchy 9 off 27 balls in India’s pathetic score of 112 all-out out of which Dhoni alone had scored 60 odd runs.
Srilanka duly completed the Anhilation by scoring the required runs off just 20 overs losing only 3 wickets.
The number 4 slot in the Indian ODI and T/20, team was up for grabs with the repeated failure of players like Rayudu, Vijay Shankar, and Pant.Shreyas was recalled for the West Indies series immediately after India’s disastrous campaign in the 2019 World Cup at England.
He impressed against the Windies scoring back to back half centuries in two ODIs. He really impressed in the following tour of Newzealand last year where he ended up being the top run getter with two half centuries and one century in the three match series, played mostly on green top pitches with swing and bounce. He scored 217 runs totally, at an average of more than fifty.More than justifying the faith selectors imposed in him.
Speaking on his performance at no 4 slot he said “If you have been playing at that slot for more than a year for India, there should be no more questions asked about it.when the debate was going on about no 4 slot, performing consistently at no 4 and and sealing that position was very satisfying.
“Iyer said he was flexible and ready to play at any position the team wanted depending on the match situation. Seeing him bat ,Indian Skipper Koi said he was reminded of himself in younger days.Iyer, in turn described Kohli like a Lion in the team ,saying “whenever he goes out on the field he has the same energy and intensity like he is playing his first match he is never tired and energetic like a lion. You can see it in his body language whenever he enters the field.”
Remembering his IPL stint with Delhi Capitals, Iyer recalled his debut season with them in 2015,where he ended up scoring 439 runs and being nominated as player of the future.
He played with a fractured index finger and at one time doubted if would even complete the season, but Coach Kirsten convinced him telling him “hide somewhere in the field while fielding but you must bat for us”
Iyer said Delhi Capitals were a team of youngsters who played fearless but matured cricket in 2019 ,and finally shrugged off the perineal underachievers tag by reaching the last four stage .”We had a sense of belief and and our aim was to reach the semi final stages.”Hopefully we will be the champs next season” he said confidently, while signing off.
