The Indian Premier League is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining T20 Leagues in the entire world. While we have seen several talented Indian cricketers participate in the league, we have also seen the likes of some world-class overseas players. The likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Kieron Pollard, and many more have been a constant part of the IPL. However, there are a few great overseas players who haven’t played a single IPL game. That said, here is a list of 5 overseas players who have yet to play in the IPL:
At the top of this list is Pakistani pacer, Wahab Riaz. In his T20I career, Wahab has played a total of 36 matches. In those 36 matches, the left-arm bowler has scalped a total of 34 wickets, with a career-best of 3/18. Wahab Riaz has played in several T20 Leagues around the world, including the Caribbean Premier League and the Pakistan Super League. Hence, he has plenty of experience playing in the T20 League format. However, on account of cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the BCCI has banned Pakistani cricketers from participating in the IPL.
The English wrist spinner is another cricketer who hasn’t participated in the IPL. Currently a part of the England T20I squad, Rashid poses an immense threat with the ball. The right-arm wrist spinner has fared well in English conditions, where it is relatively easy to bat on. Hence, there is a strong possibility that Rashid might perform quite well in Indian conditions; which is quite spin-friendly. In his T20I career, Adil Rashid has played 57 matches, in which he has scalped a total of 55 wickets. Clearly, Adil Rashid has the potential to perform immensely well in the IPL. Rashid deserves a chance to play in the IPL. It is just a matter of time for the leg spinner to be picked up by any IPL franchise.
Third on this list is English cricketer Joe Root. Joe Root is one of England’s most talented cricketers around. However, Root has built a reputation as a successful Test batsman. Hence, he has not fared quite well in the T20 format. After going unsold for a couple of years in the IPL auction, Root withdrew his name from the IPL 2021 auction that took place on 18th February 2021. There is a huge possibility that we may never witness Root play in the IPL.
Another English cricketer on this list is pace bowler Stuart Broad. Broad has been at the helm of affairs alongside James Anderson in the England National Test team. Stuart Broad was signed by Punjab in the 2011 IPL edition for 1.8 cr. However, Broad could not play as he got injured. Prior to that, Broad never received any bids from IPL franchises.
Fifth on this list is Bangladeshi cricketer Tamim Iqbal. Iqbal is the current captain of the Bangladesh National ODI side. The 32-year-old was roped in by Pune Warriors India in IPL 2012. Iqbal was part of the PWI squad for IPL 2013 as well. However, he did not make a single appearance across 2 seasons. After PWI left the IPL, Tamim Iqbal was no longer part of the Indian T20 League. The Bangladeshi cricketer hasn’t played in the IPL since.
