The IPL has seen a number of controversies.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most glorious leagues in world cricket. It has been an important factor for a number of cricketers all over the globe to shape their careers and helped them get their names on the national side of their respective nations.

But with glory comes controversy too. While the IPL has been a stimulating factor for a lot of players in their careers, it has also been surrounded by controversies over the years. Here’s a look at some of the instances when IPL and the franchises came under scrutiny.

Ban of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals

CSK and RR have faced a two-year ban each in the IPL.

One of the most successful teams in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the winners of the first edition Rajasthan Royals (RR) were slapped with two-year ban each for being involved in the spot-fixing scandal. In the 2013 edition, RR players S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested for allegedly being involved in spot-fixing scandal while CSK owner N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan’s came in the limelight too.

Meiyappan’s name came forward as he was accused of betting and leaking the information about the team to the bookies. He was later found guilty for the same in 2014.

RR co-owners Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra were reportedly accused of betting. The two franchises were then slapped with bans from the 2016 and 2017 editions.

One of the finest actors that Bollywood has ever produced, Shah Rukh Khan also attracted some controversy when he got involved in an ugly spat with a security guard at the Wankhede stadium. The instance took place after the match between KKR and hosts Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2012.

The Bollywood star had allegedly abused MCA officials and pushed the security guard during the incident. However, SRK claimed that the security guards had pushed his daughter Suhana.

Later, SRK was banned from entering the stadium. The ban was later revoked in 2015.

Vikas Dalvi who was the security guard in the incident expressed his disappointment in revoking Shah Rukh’s ban and said, “I’m not happy with the decision of MCA’s managing committee. What can I do? The members of the committee didn’t speak to me before lifting the ban.”

No one can really “sack” MS Dhoni, especially from the helm position. This was something that was pretty understandable after what he had achieved as the captain at the global level as well as in the IPL. But this did happen.

After CSK was banned for two years, Dhoni went to play for RPS. He was the captain for the side in the 2016 edition but the franchise didn’t really have a great run. The right-handed batsman was then sacked from his position before the start of the 2017 edition and Steve Smith was appointed as the new captain.

To add to this, Harsh Goenka, brother of the actual owner of RPS took a dig at Dhoni on a number of occasions. However, Dhoni continued to play for RPS as the wicket-keeper batsman under Smith in that season and later returned to CSK in 2018.
