From MS Dhoni to Yuvraj Singh and from Harbhajan Singh to Zaheer Khan, almost every member of the Indian team in 2011 was playing the World Cup to lift it for one man and that was Sachin Tendulkar. And the players did execute their plans in the most brilliant way they could have.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to lift the World Cup for the second time in the history of the game.
Batting first, Sri Lanka rode on Mahela Jayawardene’s 103* to put 274/6 in 50 overs. In reply, Lasith Malinga struck early in Mumbai to remove Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar when the score read 31.
Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir then stitched a partnership of 83 runs for the third wicket. Kohli scored a 35 before getting out to Dilshan but Gambhir stood strong and held the innings from one end.
Captain Dhoni who didn’t really have a good tournament with the bat promoted himself up the order and scored 91* to lead the side from the front.

Gambhir missed out on a World Cup final hundred by a whisker after he was cleaned up by Perera for 97. But Yuvraj and Dhoni made sure there was no more damage and took India over the line to create history.
Dhoni finished the match in style as he smacked a maximum.
